The Open Source Software Seminar 2003 - Monday 4 August 2003

See also The Second Open Source Seminar - Friday 3 March 2006

The opportunities and challenges for using Open Source Software (OSS) to provide a fit-for-purpose, value-for-money solution were explored at a one-day seminar hosted by GOVIS at the Copthorne Hotel, Wellington Plimmer Towers on August 4th.

GOVIS invited Chief Information Officers (CIO's), Chief Technology Officers (CTO's), agency ICT professionals and other interested parties to this seminar, so they could informed their decision making on OSS.

In its briefing paper on OSS, the E-government Unit of the State Services Commission has stated that agencies should make decisions on the use of software on cost, function, interoperability, and security grounds.

This seminar provided a broad and balanced overview of the issues associated with OSS, including the total cost of ownership, security, legal issues and availability of support.
