Pre-Conference Workshop Day

Wellington Town Hall ~ 23 July 2002

Registration on the GOVIS Pre-Conference workshops is open to everyone. As a way of contributing back to the Information Systems community, GOVIS have negotiated these workshops for you at a special fee.

Workshop Outline - Tuesday 23 July 2002

Service Level Agreements: what you put in and how you use them

8:00– 12:00 (Limited to 30 people)

presenters: Stephen Revill & Simon Martin - Bell Gully, Barristers and Solicitors

The aim of the workshop is to develop knowledge, skills and abilities amongst the participants to enable them to better manage business and legal risks associated with IT services using effective service level agreements. By the end of the workshop you will be better able to identify good and bad IT contracting practices relating to service levels; identify typical positions taken by suppliers on key contracting issues related to service levels; and manage better contracts post signing.

In order to achieve these objectives, the workshop will cover two case studies.

1. The negotiation of service levels and associated penalties and incentives, covering service level requirements, dependencies and rebates; performance measurement and reporting; limitations, assumptions and exclusions; specification of requirements; and scope of change;

2. Service level agreement and relationship management, covering the importance of the ongoing management of services that have been outsourced; monitoring and control techniques; alignment of business expectations; planning forward and the management of change; motivating the supplier towards change

Simon Martin specialises in corporate and commercial law with particular expertise in the communications and information technology industry. He is also involved in sponsorship, franchising, licensing, supply and distribution contracts. Stephen Revill has been a partner at Bell Gully since 1991 and has extensive experience in preparing and negotiating information technology contracts. Stephen has acted for government departments on a number of large scale IT contracts and has particular expertise with service level agreements
